Nyarai of the Vavhimi

Nyarai of the Vavhimi

Nyarai is the protagonist of my recently completed short story “Mark of a Muvhimi”, in which she has to drive a herd of Stegosaurus into a trap set up by her peers. She doesn’t think she is qualified to do the job, but she’ll find out whether that’s the case at all—the hard way. I originally wrote the story in response to a prompt on a fantasy writing forum, but I’ve also submitted it to Clarkesworld Magazine for publication. They should get back to me within a couple of days.

Muvhimi (plural is vavhimi) is a Zimbabwean Shona word meaning hunter, for her culture is based on that of the Shona. They were the ethnic group who built the civilization of Great Zimbabwe, for which the modern nation is named.
